Article 29 Working Party

The Article 29 Working Party or A29 WP has been established on the basis of Article 29 of the Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data as an independent entity having an advisory status. Members of the working party are representatives of the national authorities responsible for personal data protection in concerned Member State, representatives of the European authority supervising personal data protection and representatives of the European Commission.

It is the official advisory body to the European Commission in the field of personal data protection and the main forum for cooperation in this area within the EU. Data Protection Authorities meet there to exchange opinions on current problems, discus common explication of legislation on personal data protection and they provide expert advices to the European Commission. Main tasks of the Article 29 Working Party are:  

  • Provide expert opinions to the European Commission at the level of the Member States concerning data protection issues,
  • Support unique application of general principles of directives concerning the protection of personal data in all EU member states, through cooperation between national supervisory authorities for data protection,
  • Provide guidance to the European Commission related to any Community measures that affect the rights and freedoms of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and consequently the protection of citizens' privacy  ,
  • Issue recommendations to general public and mainly to Community bodies in matters relating to the protection of individuals with regard to processing of personal data and the protection of citizens' privacy in EC.
